The Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Institute of Technology (IoT) has recently hosted a series of events designed to support key regional growth sectors.

The £25 million development opened its doors to learners in September 2025 and delivers high-quality technical skills training in priority areas including advanced engineering and manufacturing, modern methods of construction, creative & digital technologies and health sciences.

The IoT hosted its first Creative Digital Skills Day, welcoming over 100 students from NSCG and Stoke-on-Trent College together with relevant staff from South Staffordshire College for an industry-focused event featuring workshops and employer talks. Throughout the day, students took part in a range of sessions designed to strengthen their practical skills and industry awareness. Workshops included One Minute Briefs, which focused on developing and processing creative ideas, Sound & Vision, which provided an introduction to the podcasting studio, Camera Movements, offering an insight into tracking techniques for cinematic shots and Artificial Light, which introduced students to studio setups and lighting techniques for product photography.

Alongside the workshops, attendees heard from local employers who shared insights into the skills and attributes required in the creative industries. Speakers included former NSCG student, Amy Stuart from Vidsy, Steve Cranston from Lilac Films, Rich Greene from Snakebyte Media and Claire Hand and Becky Howard from the NSCG Marketing team.

The IoT also welcomed employers from across the construction sector, including CITB, 24-7 Group Ltd, WJ Group, AIB Solutions, Eos Surveyors Ltd, Staffordshire Jobs and Careers, Thorp Precast and BET365. Visitors had the opportunity to explore the facilities, technology and training opportunities, as well as the higher education programmes on offer in Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying and Building Services Engineering.

The IoT features a range of industry-standard environments designed to support hands-on learning and sector-specific training. These include a VR/AR immersive space, a mock hospital ward, testing laboratories, robotics and automation equipment and an advanced manufacturing learning factory.

Georgina Barnard, Vice Principal - IoT, said: “These events showcase exactly what the Institute of Technology is about.  Bringing students and employers together in sector-specific environments so that learners gain practical skills and industry insight they need to thrive in the modern workforce.  It was a very enjoyable day for everyone involved.”
