What attracted you to study the HNC at the Institute of Technology?

Studying the HNC has been part of my apprenticeship at GE Vernova and the higher education course was the next step for me. I also studied at NSCG at Level 3 so the setting of college life was familiar to me.

Why did you pick this course over a traditional university route?

The HNC has allowed me to gain engineering experience as well as real-world work experience. I am not a fan of exams, so this was a great choice for me. I also wanted to avoid having any student debt.

How did you find out about the course?

Having been a student at Stafford College on the Level 3 Engineering course, the HE courses were something that I knew about, but after leaving college, I got an apprenticeship with GE Vernova so went down that route. And the IoT has been a game-changer in terms of the facilities now on offer.

Who or what inspired you to consider a career in engineering?

I have always had an interest in engineering from a young age. I particularly enjoy finding out how things work and are put together. So an engineering role is the perfect career for me.

How is the HNC helping you to climb the career ladder and upskill?

The course at the IoT is helping me to expand my engineering knowledge generally. Studying and working helps me to bring everything I've learnt in college to the workplace which is also positive for the company, as I am getting access to expert lecturers and the latest technology.

Have you had the chance to get involved in any exciting projects? If so tell us all about it.

In September 2025, I took on a new role within the 'Transfer of Technology' engineering team. This role involves providing technical support for partner factories and suppliers. Our team also offers in-person support in South Korea, India and Turkey.

What key industry skills have you enjoyed developing?

I have developed lots of key industry skills which are transferable across engineering generally. I've particularly enjoyed developing CAD Software Skills, International Relations, Problem Solving Skills and Communication Skills.

Theory vs practical. What do you enjoy most and why?

Practical definitely! I a more of a visual and 'hands on' learner.

The IoT offers cutting-edge learning facilities. How does the equipment, facilities and teaching help you to develop specialist skills for your career?

We have access to so many computers and lots of emerging technology. This helps our cohort to visualise and complete our work to the next level.

On completion of the HNC, what's next for you?

I am nearing the end of my HNC and once I have completed that and my apprenticeship, I want to move onto the HND for future career progression.

What would your advice be to anyone thinking of studying this course at NSCG?

If you want to keep expanding your skills and knowledge in engineering, the IoT can certainly give you access to top-end equipment and technology. This has really benefited me so I recommend the HNC and HND Engineering courses to any fellow engineers looking to gain the edge and use the experiences and opportunities on offer to progress in their careers.
